For many years now, we’ve alternated going to Florida for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year is a “Thanksgiving year”, so we were all set to head to the sunshine state for Turkey day. The days leading up to the trip were chaotic, and I wondered how in the world we would possibly be ready to go! But finally, everything was packed, all pets were properly distributed to their temporary care-givers, and we were set.
Our flight was out of Denver, early on Saturday morning, so we got a hotel close to the airport that would let us leave our car there for the whole week, planning to drive up Friday night. Some friends invited us to play laser tag on Friday night, so we stopped on the way out of town to do that. Not exactly conventional, but it was tons of fun! Of course Brian totally “smoked” me, but it was the first time I had ever played. I didn’t realize what a workout you get from it either!
Our flight had a layover in Atlanta, where we used to live. It was definitely nostalgic being back in the Atlanta airport! Wished we had time to show Lily more of the city, but I did take teh opportunity to pick up a Georgia Tech hoodie 🙂
Immediately after arriving in Florida, we were off to Port St. Lucie, for cousin-Cassie’s cheerleading competition. We stayed at another hotel there (a few days earlier I made the reservation on my iPod, which I thought was pretty cosmic!), and watched Cassie perform! The girls did very well, but Brian was a little overwhelmed by the chaos and noise of the whole event, and said he hoped Lily never got into cheerleading, because he wasn’t sure he could handle this on a regular basis, lol!
Back in Naples, when we weren’t Thanksgiving-feasting, we spend many hours in Grandma and Grandpa’s pool. Lily was very comfortable in the water now, and would have stayed in there all week if we let her. Once Cassie and Cam were out of school for the week, they were able to join us making it even more fun. (Lily had the whole week off from school, instead of the tradition Wed-Fri, and I had to take a couple days off work so that we could take advantage of the cheaper weekend airfare)
The Thanksgiving feast was large and filling as usual. Aunt Ovon and Uncle Cecil were even there, and Lily and Cam did their traditional battle for the wishbone. She and Cam actually got along very well this trip, and spent a lot of time together. Nice that they are almost the same age.

Later in the week we went into downtown to see the Naples Christmas Tree lighting! Santa was there, and there was even fake snow. It was very crowded though, and keeping up with all 3 kids was no small challenge.
We also made another visit to Santa, at the Bass Pro Shops Winter Wonderland. It may seem like a strange place for a Santa visit, but every year they make this huge part of teh store dedicated to it. They decorate it to look like the North Pole, and there are tons of games and activities for the kids to do.
We flew home very early on black Friday, again having to fit our schedule around what airfare we could avoid. Back in Colorado, we took advantage of being in Denver to make a quick stop by the Disney store, then had our tradition we-just-got-home dinner at Fiesta Jalisco.
Another successful visit to the family complete, now time to get ready for Christmas back at home!
