Summer Visit to Florida – June 2009

We flew into Ft. Myers late on Thursday night, and were ready to hit the road on Friday morning! In the trip at this point was: Grandma, Grandpa, Ashley, Jaime, Lily, Cassie, and Cam. We drove north, stopping in Tampa for a tour of the Ringling Museum. We went through their house, and saw lots of circus memorabilia in the museum.

Later in the afternoon, we continued on to Ocala, where we checked in to the Hilton hotel. We got an old fashioned carriage ride, then went to dinner at a steakhouse. Mike and Tina arrived while we were eating and joined us. We had been hoping for an evening swim, but it was too late when we got back, so we turned in for the night.

The next morning we awoke to an unfortunate sight – it was pouring rain! With our plans for Silver Springs not seeming like such a good idea, and hotel check-out time fast approaching, we quickly made the decision to check out a day early instead and head to Orlando instead, and spend the day at Downtown Disney! Lily had never been, so it seemed like a fun way to spend the day and escape the rain.

We got there around lunchtime and ate at Earl of Sandwich. Afterwards, we spent some time looking around in the shops, and picked up some neat souvenirs. Of course the kids rode the train and carousel, and “met” all the character statues! We had dinner at the Rainforest Cafe, thanks to a reservation I had made weeks ago (when I initially thought we might be driving through Orlando around dinner time, then our plans changed. I had forgotten to cancel it though, oops!)

We went by the Crocs store on the way to our hotel, and Lily got some Princess charms to keep on a board. We were staying at the Doubletree near Universal, thanks to a last minute reservation we made on the way to Orlando.

On Sunday, we headed back towards Tampa, to Weeki Wachee Springs to meet the mermaids! We got a little mixed up on the way, but arrived in plenty of time to see some shows, take the river boat cruise, and most importantly, meet a real mermaid! Lily thought the whole thing was “awesome”. Then it was time to head on back to Naples.

Most of Monday was spent hanging out and doing some swimming in Grandma and Grandpa’s pool. On Tuesday, we got up early and headed to the beach to meet our private photographer, who took some really great photos of the kids playing in the sand and the water! And of course we stayed for a while after to play some more.

But they hadn’t had enough water, so from there we went to the Naples waterpark, and spent the whole afternoon playing! It was a toasty day, sure felt good to be wet. Once home, Cam crashed, but the girls STILL hadn’t had enough, and did some more swimming in the pool. They watched the Tinkerbell movie after dinner.

Wednesday, it was time to go home. The kids swam a little more and did some sidewalk chalk until it was time to leave for the airport. We didn’t get home until almost midnight due to some delays. But it was a fun trip with lots of memories for sure!
