Puerto Vallarta – June 2007

Our second family vacation with Lily, and our first time traveling internationally with her!!! After a minor scare that our passports wouldn’t come on time, we were finally all set for a week at the Sol Melia Resort, in Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

Getting there is never half the fun though, and this time it wasn’t any fun at all. Lily had a major meltdown on our first flight (to Dallas) and was still at it when we got off the plane for our layover. We had been enduring many nasty looks and comments, but got a small amount of encouragement from a stranger as she was getting off the plane. She passed Brian a note commending us on how we were handling the situation and assured us we were doing the right thing. It was so helpful to at least know that one person didn’t think we had totally failed as parents! At last, the tantrum subsided, and we made the second flight with much less drama.

The resort was beautiful. There were large ponds, surrounded by palm trees, flowers, and tiled walkways. The whole place felt like a tropical paradise. There was a spot at teh end of one of the main walkways that was perfect for watching the sun set over the ocean!

Most of our days were spent lounging by the pool, hanging out on the beach (Lily liked the sand much better than the ocean itself), or enjoying the playground at the resort. They also had a giant chessboard, with pieces almost as big as Lily, and she had lots of fun playing her Dad (who of course won, but not before she gleefully captured a few of his pieces!)

Every night, the resort dancers put on a different show – the first one we went to was the Flintstones, Lily was quite mesmerized but got a little sleepy by the end. She says she wants to learn to dance like that 🙂 The next night we saw the circus show.

One of the many benefits of the hotel was that it was all-inclusive, meaning that we could anything we wanted, at any of the resort restaurants! We ate many of our meals at the buffet, but one night got more adventurous, and Jaime even tried the steamed cactus at the Mexican specialty restaurant.

I was HUGE! She would paddle around, pretending to be a mermaid like Ariel, and even got brave enough by the end of the week to jump into the pool and go underwater. Brian also worked with her a lot on learning to float on her back, and made good progress. And the “powerful jets” in the pool were a big hit! Jaime spent a lot of time relaxing in the chairs while Brian and Lily splashed in the water.

Lily also liked using her sand toys on the beach. She built several castles, and spent hours digging for treasure. She was both fascinated and terrified of the water though, and would only venture into it if one of us was holding her.

Eventually, we were growing restless, and decided to venture out of the resort for an adventure – a Pirate Adventure! We took a cab into to town, and boarded the Marigalante Pirate ship! We got to eat breakfast and lunch below deck, and our “personal pirate” Omar, saw to our every need.

The pirates on board performed a show for us, and then we docked at a “secret uncivilized beach”, where we spent several hours playing, and even did a banana boat ride! Lily did a treasure hunt, and Brian played tug-of-war.

On the ride back, there was more dancing, sword fighting, and several pirates had to walk the plank! Lily especially liked the part where the exiled “good pirates” snuck back on board the ship. One “bad pirate” even tried to use Brian to hide behind!

We had lunch – Jaime discovered what would become known as “Mexican Zucchini”, and Lily got to go up on stage to get a sword and pirate medal. What a fun adventure! Back on land, we even got to hug a sea lion.

It was finally time to go home though, we took one last dip in the pool, and headed to the airport. We somehow got upgraded to first class, and appreciated the extra room. Lily did much better on our flight home this time – hopefully she has grown up a bit on this trip!
