After trying out many of the different ski resorts in our state, we have decided Copper is our favorite, so this year we are, for the first time, staying on-site in a slopeside Condo! Part of our package deal included Secret-Pass lift tickets, so we will be able to skip the lines! Last year, I didn’t get to ski, since i was pregnant with Owen, and I’m anxious to see how I do on the slopes this year.
We arrived on Friday night, and got checked into Tucker Mountain Lodge. Copper has a really nice parking deck that goes underneath all the slopeside condo buildings, so you don’t even have to go outside at all to get from your car to your room. Spoiled indeed! Plus it allows them to easily heat the walkways in that area from underneath so they don’t stay icy and snow-covered. Our building was in an awesome location – right across from the Copper One building that had the main shops and restaurants!
On Saturday, I let Brian and Lily ski while I stayed with Owen. She is really getting good these days, and didn’t even want to “waste time” in lessons this year, because she complained that they always spent too much time just sitting around. They mostly skied greens, but I think Brian talked her into going down a couple of blues too.
The nice thing about having a condo is that we can eat breakfast and lunch there. Lunch at the village is especially tedious, and we were grateful to be able to relax in the peace of our own room for our mid-day break, instead of being crammed into one of the few restaurants by the slopes.
We do like to eat out for dinner though, and during the trip discovered two restaurants that we will likely be coming back to – Tuckers Tavern and Salsa Mountain Cantina. It was so nice knowing after dinner that we didn’t have a long, dark drive ahead of us, just a short walk back to our room!
On Sunday, it was finally my turn to ski – dropped Owen off at daycare (wished them luck at getting him to nap…) and me and Lily headed for the lifts! I was excited, but nervous too. I hadn’t skied in two years, did I even remember how? The chair lift ride was extremely nerve-wracking. I’ve never liked those things, but I was unusually uncomfortable for some reason.

I did okay skiing, all things considered, but I was definitely out of practice, and Lily could easily out-ski me now. Oh well. We took a break in the room for lunch again, then Lily and I were off to go tubing! At least this was a less terrifying way to slide down the mountain. The plan was to go out for one more run on the slopes after our tubing session, but once back in the room, we decided that a soak in the outdoor hottub sounded like way more fun. I had had enough skiing, I decided. Maybe these arthritic joints weren’t really cut-out for this sport anyway.
On Monday, we had to check out of the condo, but Brian and Lily still wanted to get in a bit more skiing. So Owen and I tried to entertain ourselves in the lobby or across the walkway over in the main building. This was the disadvantage of trying to ski on check-out day, it left Owen and I “homeless” for several hours. At one point, he had a little diaper explosion, and not being easily able to get to our luggage (it was loaded already in the car-top carrier) so I had to buy him a souvenir shirt, lol!
We were also a little concerned about the weather for a drive home – a major winter storm had arrived, and the roads were looking a bit treacherous. In a fit of nervousness, I even called the front desk to see if we could extend our stay until the next day, but they were all booked up, so we had to leave, like it or not!
The storm also made skiing a little challenging for Brian and Lily that morning, as the winds near the top made visibility very low, and it was hard to even maintain good control. It was so bad that they had to close the lifts several times. Sure glad it hadn’t been like this the whole weekend!
We did end up making it home okay, fortunately. It was slow-going, but driveable.
So, here ends our first on-site stay at Copper! It was a definite hit, and I think we’ve found “our” winter vacation spot 🙂
